Casting Baby Tasmanian Devil’s Broken Leg

Tim forner from the Australian reptile park has made a dash to the Bondi Clinic with a very special six-month-old patient Lewis is in a bit of strife along for the ride is Lewis’s twin sister Luna so did you see what happened or do you know what happened to him basically they got up to a bit of Mischief just running around and and Lewis comes back and his leg is you know visibly SAR and it could be a bite it could be a fall it could be some sort of injury through play yeah yeah they’re definitely
playing like it hasn’t stopped him he’s still nuts wait can’t tell us what happened yeah two of you the rest will get a bit out of control is it huh I just say looks like you came on second best ah it’s it’s just all one Big Y is it you’re all right first Chris needs to remove move Tim’s amate handiwork you stuck it on first one I put on he just tore it off ripped it straight off so I’m trying to move this leg as as little as possible but he’s just making little grunting sound they give so little away but the little
grunting sound he’s making it’s bothering him yeah leis right now is whimpering from time to time he’s really guarding that leg he’s trying to hide it from me so if it’s worrying him then it’s really worrying me an ex Ray will tell Chris just how serious the injury is oh don’t do [Music] that but Lewis is not planning to make it easy yeah but it’s it’s for Comfort right it’s just security yeah security they bought on the mom your [Applause] mom I’ve never heard a gr man make that sound he’s a dog all right
fortunately those baby teeth are not doing too much damage just yet pop good boy he’s being good he’s not struggling it’s [Music] right and I can see this straight away man it’s not great news he does actually have a fracture there yeah if we do nothing about it then it’s really going to limit his life yeah and he just wouldn’t be able to breede wouldn’t be able to get around wouldn’t be able to survive I’m a little bit in a of him how much he’s been able to get around and put up with that I cringed when I I saw
the X-ray and I think you know what what Spirit these little Devils have got huh barking leg buy I to say it we’re going to fix it though managing Louis’s leg I can really see two big challenges here first of all he’s growing so we can’t use a cast that’s just going to lock that leg in position for months that won’t work but but secondly he’s a tazzy devil he bites and he chews he will tear off anything I put near that leg this isn’t going to be easy you know I’ve done that exact injury same leg you kidding same bone do
you want to know how I did it yeah tell me on a dance FL Boogie moves oh no what move a uh running inverted worm landed and cracked the bone there maybe that’s what Louis did maybe going to come clean L you showing off to your [Music] sister easy right I can’t use a cast in this leg for the simple fact that even if it’s on for 4 weeks 6 weeks his leg will probably go a full centimeter in that time if there’s a cast over that bone the bone won’t grow so he’ll have one leg shorter than the other what we
need to do is give him some sort of splint that is strong enough to stop that bone from moving but still flexible enough that the bone can grow within it I’m amazed how good he’s been he’s been incredible this advice I know you won’t listen to but I’m going to give it to you anyway just go easy take life slowly let’s not panic let’s just enjoy our youth in the slow lane just for a few weeks is that okay it’ll make a big difference what we really need from him is is essentially the impossible for him
to stay quiet this bandage will mean that he really stays off the leg a lot but he still going to try to push his limits cuz that’s what Devils do yeah 4 weeks maybe cuz he’s so young could be enough just got to stay off it for most pets that I seen here if their leg isn’t 100% it doesn’t really matter they can get around even if they have a slight limp for a tazzy devil like Lewis his leg needs to be 100% because in the future he’s going to go and essentially live in the wild he has to survive there but also he has to
breed there on three legs he just can’t do that I’m just impressed that two tazzy Devils visited here and the only person that really got a bite was was me yeah no dogs injured no cats no nurses Y no one was harmed in the filming of this segment apart from me it’s looking good look at that leg how good is your leg you’re running 4 weeks later good news at the Australian reptile Park where baby Lewis is back in action with his sister Luna the cast come off a week ago and from the moment it come off he was strong he his leg has
shown no signs of tenderness or anything he’s using it like a normal Devil he’s running jumping fighting with his sister everything we could have hoped for that leg looks good buddy that leg looks good your sister won’t be able to bash you anymore mate your leg’s all better you’re all strong again hey how you going good thanks how are you I’m after Harriet is that you or is that this little one the beater dragon is Harriet okay and I’m Hannah awesome okay come on through thank you very much one look at you she’s
beautiful yeah so what’s the problem with her she got a lump on her leg just on her right hand leg just here yep okay and you can see she can feel it when I touch it so this lump got bigger yeah it was a lot more soft and mushy now it’s just hardened up I think I’ll need to take a sample from it to know for sure what it is but obviously the biggest worry with any lump is something like a tumor or cancer cancer would be the absolute worst case scenario for Harriet she’s just too beautiful and precious to us
you sweetie it’s all right s fingers crossed that this is actually not a tumor and it’s something we can actually fix I want to get a sample from that lump y so I’m going to have to stick a needle in there it’s just important to know what’s sitting inside that lump the two most likely causes of this or rather a tumor yep if that’s the case we’re probably going to get tissue so pink stuff maybe in a bit of blood okay all right if it is an abscess we should probably get something that looks a bit
like cheese it’s right [Music] sweetie it’s not really conclusive the fluid that’s come out is fairly clear yeah what I might do is actually just put that under the microscope and just see what sort of cells are sitting in there it is scary to know that she may have a cancer or tumor if anything bad happened to her like that type of news it would be [Music] terrible all right there’s a lot of one type of cell here [Music] there’s a whole lot of parcels in there so what we have is an absis that makes me feel a bit better
than it being a cancer yeah thank you it is a big relief to know it’s not cancer and that it’s just an absis but it’s still um a little scary what’s happened here is we’ve had an initial infection which has caused a sudden massive pasta form there okay what happens with reptiles is that they can’t break that P down themselves they’re left with a lump okay and it becomes firmer harder and it just stays there the problem with this absis is that essentially it’s a bow of bacteria if we don’t do anything about it it can
very easily spread around the rest of the body and from there it could kill her so she’s going to need to stay with us and we’re going to need to actually put her under anesthetic okay and actually cut that lump out do you hear that Harriet the one thing that we just need to be mindful of is that reptile anesthetics are tricky y they’re hard they don’t generally breathe that well for themselves they under anesthetic oh okay so it becomes quite a big procedure to get her under anesthetic and keep her there yep even
though harri’s small and we’re dealing with something like an absis there’s still a lot that can go wrong all right you need to say goodbye I’m just worried that Harriet won’t pull through it but it’s always that worry isn’t there we’ve just got to deal with it see [Music] sweetie going haret it’s time you ready mate to [Music] right Chris and Andrew are about to start surgery to remove an absis from Harriet’s leg let’s get that beautiful bead of yours in here come on it’s okay but putting the 3-year-old under
anesthetic is incredibly dangerous the underlying problem with any reptile their whole metabolism Works incredibly slowly so they can be holding their breath and be fine or they can not be breathing and be far from fine and they both look the same kind of tals has dropped there we’re pretty close there if you that you yeah all ready to go Andrew is assisting Chris with the delicate operation keeping a constant watch on Harriet’s Vital Signs and damn difficult things to monitor the anesthetic of I’m pretty happy had deep
shoes we’ll just get it back on in two Harry being a reptile is living up to the he she’s breathing incredibly shallow but her heart rate at the moment is pretty stable so that’s good enough it’s time to get [Music] started just cut over the absis there and now we just need to get in and around it essentially shell it out so the trick now is going to be getting right around what is going to be a pretty decent sized [Music] Mass beautiful beautiful job so I’m just going to flush this hole here and just to remove any bacteria
that might still be sitting inside there it’s time to S it back up [Music] got two stitches to go sure [Music] good I’m not getting a raiding on her heart right suddenly Andrew notices a change in Harriet it’s just not breathing well she’s just breathholding and Y any more reflexes really [Music] come on Harriet come on we been through so much don’t give up [Music] now her tongue just flick just a little bit that’s what I like to see at last the three-year-old gives Chris and Andrew the sign they’ve been waiting for
it’s hard to believe that something as minor as a tongue flick can mean so much but with Harriet it means she’s coming back hold on Grace I got to say it’s good to see you you went quiet on us an antibiotic injection completes Harriet’s treatment he sett there hey wa see all these signs of life now would have been quite handy when you’re actually under own I yeah you put you away in the cage you ear a rest another one come on go it’s pretty amazing to think that this Clinic sees all the big stuff but
it’s been a tiny little bit of dragon today that’s caused us to have a wild ride but she’s pulled through you rest up okay now we’ll be tour you okay a yeah should have better than the lady waiting shouldn’t I Harriet the bearded dragon has recovered from surgery to remove an absis from her leg and is ready to head back to the kyabram forer Park’s going to be happy to see you come home now right made and the beaded lady heading out and then I’m going to head home it’s been done good to have you you’re
done a really good job absolute pleasure I’ll tell you what if things don’t go so well I put Bond di for him all can we uh could fit him into the practice down here all right he seems to do a pretty good [Music] [Music] job yeah Hannah Chris someone’s been missing you h a little girl in here yeah a we’re happy I have you back Harriet Chris’s done a great job she looks really good and healthy so everything looks like it’s worked out well and so we’re very happy with that is this a good spot here she like
yeah she’ll be fine there she’ll like that good girl POS first there you go you’re home neither Hannah nor Harry will probably ever truly understand just how tense that surgery really was but I do that’s why I’m very happy to see her home
